Chapter 18

Matty and Toni re-entered the room. ‘What’d we miss?’ Toni asked.

Jordan shook his head. ‘Not a thing.’

Ryn interrupted with a cough. ‘As nice as this little reunion of ours has been, we better figure out what we’re doing and, since those two are ditching us, it’s us four on the next adventure.’

Toni spun around and she stormed up to Ryn. ‘Enough of the comments, Ryn. You left me. You left me and now I’m leaving you. Lawlie, Jordan, nice to meet you. Cobin, I’m sure you’re lovely and, Ryn, goodbye again. Matty, let’s go.’ She held Matty by his huge arm and pulled him out the front door, slamming it behind him.

‘I didn’t even get to say goodbye,’ I muttered.

‘Yeah, she must have really wanted to get away from someone,’ Cobin laughed, raising his eyebrows at Ryn.

‘Hey, it’s not my fault. There were a lot of factors behind the break up and I simply don’t have time to get into it with you both right now, but yes, I think it is fair to say she wanted to get away from me very, very fast.’

‘You seem to have that effect on people,’ I said, pushing myself up to standing again, with Cobin joining me.

I sighed. ‘Is there anything else we need from here?’

The empty room was stripped and ruined.

Ryn smiled. ‘That settles it. We go to PreZone to get Chance, find Tyron alive and try to not get captured by Captors or Skull and Tash or Vic and Nat and save Virozone.’

I grinned. ‘Yep, that’s exactly it, but we’ll do it together.’

At that moment, the front door flew open and in rushed Toni and Matty, slamming it shut behind them.

‘We’re back,’ Toni said between breaths.

‘What happened?’

All four of us stared at both Matty and Toni as they held their backs fiercely against the large door, as if trying to lock out whoever or whatever was directly outside of it.

‘I’m pretty sure six would be better than two,’ Matty said, nodding at Toni.

‘Yes, we may have underestimated those Burners. They’re all outside waiting for us.’

I ran over to the door and tried to pry it open, but Toni stopped me. ‘NO. You can’t go out there. There’s heaps of them and they’re all yuck and burnt and fez. We need a plan.’

I hoped for a window, anything to be able to see them outside, but took Toni’s word for it and faced the group.

‘We need another way out. You both know this place – is there another way we can go? A back door, a tunnel, anything?’

Toni and Matty smiled and said, ‘The loft!’

I raised my eyebrows at the boys. Maybe we had a way out.

BANG!

The door moved roughly as if someone had slammed something into it from the other side. Both Toni and Matty lurched forward.

‘We gotta go now. Everyone get a BA on.’

We picked up our backpacks and suited up as Toni and Matty let go of the door and motioned for us to follow them. We ran
